This is an excerpt from a special Site Singing performance for World Listening Day - Institute of Acoustics (South West branch) Soundwalk Cumberland Basin Bristol, 18th July 2017.

I was invited to create a special 'surprise' vocal intervention on a sound walk around Cumberland Basin, so I worked under the Brunel Way flyover in advance, working directly with the acoustics vocally and collecting sonic 'textures' (from the trees, from the stones on the ground, from the concrete columns), and created a site specific spatial performance for the walkers to 'encounter.'

World Listening Day Soundwalk: The History and Sounds of Sylvia Crowe’s Cumberland Basin

To celebrate World Listening Day 2017, the Institute Of Acoustics (IOA) South West Branch have organised a soundwalk around the Cumberland Basin in Bristol. The walk will be led by Wendy Tippet (Andrew Kenyon Architects) and Dan Pope (Atkins/IOA SW Branch Chair).

We will meet outside Lockside Café on Brunel Lock Road at 17:00, please ensure you arrive in plenty of time so that the walk does not leave without you.

Note: Please ensure you are wearing appropriate footwear and clothing for weather on the day. The walk will be over a few miles and involves spiral staircases and busy roads

Wendy Tippett
Wendy is a landscape architect of more than 30 years’ experience, as well as 9 years as a visiting tutor on the Urban Design MA course at the University of the West of England. She wrote her MSc dissertation for Conservation of Historic Gardens and Cultural Landscapes on Unloved Landscapes: The Bristol Schemes of Sylvia Crowe.

Crowe was a pioneer of the landscape architect profession and during her nearly 70 year career moved from initial garden design to larger landscape projects after WWII. She wrote many influential books and articles, lectured widely, and her projects and interests extended overseas.
Dan Pope

Dan is chair of the IOA SW branch and will lead the soundscape and listening based side of the walk. There may be some surprises along the way.

Summer Social

Following the walk we will settle in for the branch summer social at the Cottage Inn, Cumberland Rd, BS1 6XG. For those only wanting to attend the social without going on the sound walk, we are aiming to be back at the Cottage Inn for 18:30.
